The Magic Of Youth

Mighty Mighty Bosstones The Magic Of Youth Lyrics
1.The Daylights

Darkness scared the daylights out of me last night
But by the grace of God I had a goal
To make it to the middle of the morning light
And safety saving sanity and soul

Do everything that we want to do
Try everything there is to try
There's nothing out there stopping me or you
Do everything before we die

Sanity worth saving well I'm not so sure
A soul is somewhat suitable to save
Feelings I had felt from falling on the floor
Good God I'm getting ready for the grave
The hour was the witching one when I first felt
The power of the darkness I was in
Triple six gun shooters in the bible belt
Something took me somewhere where I had never been

Do everything that we want to do
Try everything there is to try
There's nothing out there stopping me or you
Do everything before we die

It takes a rude awakening from time to time
Like the one that scared the daylights out of me
To make you take a look and shake you when you should be shook
And take you to the place that you're supposed to be

Do everything that we want to do
Try everything there is to try
There's nothing out there stopping me or you
Do everything before we die
Do everything every little thing let's do everything before we
die.

2.Like A Shotgun

There is no argument here to avoid
And I just had a way of living I enjoyed
A selfish way to live but by design
I was so self centered at the time
You were us and I was only me
And you were only waiting patiently
I think I told you I'm not sure
That I'm so goddamn insecure

A far more much much greater force
Can knock you back and off of course
Like a shotgun if there ever was one
Looked down the barrel of a loaded gun
And it was not intentional
And I am unconventional
Knocked down with a shotgun blast
I've got a feeling that it's gonna last
And if it's happening to me
I'm as happy as someone like me could be

I'm not so sure but what I said was true
That's no excuse for what I put you through
And it's just awful if that's how you feel
I'm awfully sorry for the whole ordeal
The sadness and the sorrow and the pain
I swear to God and promise once again
That I will get around to showing you
So now I'm goddamn going to

A far more much much greater force
Can knock you back and off of course
Like a shotgun if there ever was one
Looked down the barrel of a loaded gun
And it was not intentional
And I am unconventional
Knocked down with a shotgun blast
I've got a feeling that it's gonna last
And if it's happening to me
I'm as happy as someone like me could be now
Could be now

Like a shotgun if there ever was one
Looked down the barrel of a loaded gun
And it was not intentional
And I am unconventional
Knocked down with a shotgun blast
I've got a feeling that it's gonna last
And if it's happening to me
I'm as happy as someone like me
Someone like me could be
Could be now

3.Disappearing

I can hear a whistle blowing
That's my only way of knowing
Somewhere in the distance
There is probably a train
I can hear a church bell ring
That church bell doesn't mean a thing
What I've been hearing lately
I would like you to explain

The first that I heard and it never occurred
To me what I'd be hearing
The last of me that you're likely to see
You'll see that I am disappearing

I listened now with opened eyes
I heard half hearted alibis
There may have been a few things
That I might have said myself
I could hear the whistle blowing
I wonder where that train is going
I'm sure before it gets to there
That I'll be somewhere else

The first that I heard and it never occurred
To me what I'd be hearing
The last of me that you're likely to see
You'll see that I am disappearing

I've heard all of it all before
The bells the whistles and I'm sure
That it won't be the last time
That I hear the church or train
There's a first for almost everything
Whistles blow and bells will ring
This could be the last time
And I won't be back again

The first that I heard and it never occurred
To me what I'd be hearing
The last of me that you're likely to see
You'll see that I am disappearing

The first that I heard and it never occurred
To me what I'd be hearing
The last of me that you're likely to see
You'll see that I am disappearing

4.Sunday Afternoons On Wisdom Ave.

A modest triple decker in a section that was working class
Not a lot of company but we would go there after Mass
Lace curtains in the windows that had been there since the last
great war
They were on the first one and the Mulligans lived on the second
floor

Sunday driving in the big sedan
Soup and sandwich on the tv stand
Glad to be there it was nice to have
Sunday afternoons on Wisdom Ave

There was noting in the pantry and we can't be in the parlor
there
It's really nothing fancy honey here is half a dollar dear
A John F Kennedy coin that you and your brother both can share
Just not the type of people that are ever gonna to put on airs

Sunday driving in the big sedan
Soup and sandwich on the tv stand
Glad to be there it was nice to have
Sunday afternoons on Wisdom Ave

Outside on the playground there's a pick-up game of hoops
Picked up the Sunday Journal at the Greeks
We would watch the Filipinos with the yoyo's on the stoop
But no not on your life six days a week
No one was ever listening to anybody else
We only ever knew what we were told
Only on Wisdom Avenue on Sunday afternoons
Wisdom Ave's where everything grew old

Sunday driving in the big sedan
Soup and sandwich on the tv stand
Had to be there just to see first hand
Whatever had happened to my old man

Sunday driving in the big sedan
Soup and sandwich on the tv stand
Glad to be there it was nice to have
Sunday afternoons on Wisdom Ave

5.They Will Need Music

The weight of the world at least
That weight would only be increased
Beyond what mortal men would dare to bare
Even though the weight was great
They stormed the beach and then they crashed the gate
And after there was music in the air

They will need music to uplift
It'll be a godsend it'll be a gift
And hope and glory to coincide
They'll need the strength and warmth and comfort
That the music will provide

Giving everything they had and then
Sometimes you'd have to give again
Other times there's nothing so to speak
They rose to the occasion it was cause for a celebration
And the celebration lasted for a week

They will need music to uplift
It'll be a godsend it'll be a gift
And hope and glory to coincide
They'll need the strength and warmth and comfort
That the music will provide

They will need music to uplift
It'll be a godsend it'll be a gift
And hope and glory to coincide
They'll need the strength and warmth and comfort
That the music will provide

We will need music to uplift
It'll be a godsend it'll be a gift
And hope and glory to coincide
They'll need the strength and warmth and comfort
That the music will provide

6.The Package Store Petition

Don't look at me or look in my direction
Unless like me you'd like to see some change
I am the one man coalition with the package store petition
If you'd like to feel free to sign your name

Their match they've met it's not a threat
And we'll knock down every statue that they've put up
Overthrow the powers that exist
Our freedoms are at stake our way of life lies on the line
And all I need for you to do is sign

My misfortunes made me miss so many chances
Opportunities I'll never get again
But I did happen to find a cause that I can get behind
So if you don't mind would you kindly take the pen

Their match they've met it's not a threat
And we'll knock down every statue that they've put up
Overthrow the powers that exist
Our freedoms are at stake our way of life lies on the line
And all I need for you to do is sign

Without the drive or real ambition or the strength to soldier on
I was the man without a mission till this mission came along
Now I'm the one man coalition with the package store petition
Me and my seven signatures stand strong
Their match they've met it's not a threat
They've met their match it's hell they'll catch

And we'll knock down every statue that they've put up
Overthrow the powers that exist
Our freedoms are at stake our way of life lies on the line
And all I need for you to do is sign

7.The Horse Shoe And The Rabbits Foot

The horseshoe and the rabbit's foot
As luck would have it we were put
Right through the wringer recently
Which took a decent piece of me
I know that in all likelihood
That it's most likely gone for good
And I for one am good with that
So currently that's where we're at

Let's just leave well enough alone for now
We should say goodnight
I believe the horseshoe and the rabbits foot
And in the morning everything will be all right

The houndstooth and the herringbone
We couldn't have but should have known
The wringer rang it right on out
I wonder what's it all about
The story's changed so drastically
There's got to be a way that we
Could try to listen and receive
Accept acknowledge and believe

Let's just leave well enough alone for now
We should say goodnight
I believe the houndstooth and the herringbone
And in the morning everything will be all right

Lullabies and long goodbyes and I'll admit to it
I don't know what to say to you sometimes
I believe that we should just leave it alone and hopefully
In the morning everything will be all right

The sharkskin and the tortoiseshell
As luck would have it all is well
That ends like this did any way
We said all that we hat to say
And can't diminish or dismiss
There's something to be said for this
Or nothing left that should be said
Let's leave it alone instead
I think the conversation's dead

Let's just leave well enough alone for now
We should say goodnight
I believe the sharkskin and the tortoiseshell
And I believe the houndstooth and the herringbone
And I believe the horseshoe and the rabbit's foot
And in the morning everything will be all right

8.The Magic Of Youth

Do things on shoe strings to make the ends meet
Cut costs and corners in order to eat
Low income housing they couldn't afford
Bills and collectors that they just ignored

While the pressures were mounting the tensions would rise
She had been counting on some of the lies
That he had been telling her being the truth
The fighting and yelling the magic of youth
The magic of youth

He hit the pipe she hit the pole
Stereotypes that were out of control
Addictions evictions mistakes being made
Health's going south looks were starting to fade

And he'd give his right arm if his left one could get
A spike in the vein then a loose cigarette
The both lost their dignity him every tooth
Classic and tragic the magic of youth
The magic of youth

The years flew by quickly that's how they fly by
Older and sickly and waiting to die
But they stayed close together to tell you the truth
Yelling and fighting classic and tragic
It's all so exciting the magic of youth
The magic of youth
The magic of youth
The magic of youth

9.The Upper Hand

No one cares or ever oversees
Through the years you learn that under these
Conditions you have got to overlook
Somethings you don't do by the book

An uppercut that somebody deserves
Under your skin and also on your nerves
The skin gets thick and the nerves get shot
Don't forget what you were taught

They're underhanded understand
You've got to get the upper hand
Under the circumstances though
Sometimes you've got to let it go

The upside up till now had not been found
Get over it somehow stay underground
What I found out from being under there
Was never in a million years

Would I myself or anyone I knew
In any way have anything to do
With any of them now at any rate
And never underestimate

They're underhanded understand
You've got to get the upper hand
Under the circumstances though
Sometimes you've got to let it go

Understand that once you've got
The upper hand and they have not
Even the underhanded know
Sometimes you've got to let it go

On top of all of that what underlies
You don't have to apologize
No one's fault and no surprise
Life goes on when death defies

The only other thing I'd like to add
Have the greatest time you've ever had
You're overwhelmed but don't forget
You still have not seen nothing yet

They're underhanded understand
You've got to get the upper hand
Under the circumstances though
Sometimes you've got to let it go

Understand that once you've got
The upper hand and they have not
Even the underhanded know
Sometimes you've got to let it go

10.The Ballad Of Candlepin Paul

The left to run in party on the dead Disaster to plot the

11.Open And Honest

Open and honest if you'd just let me level
May I say we've been this way now since the day we met the devil
What we do and don't we know how to do and won't be
Bought and sold controlled or told he don't know how to revel
What it was we were wearing the noise that you've been hearing
A culmination of an awful lot of people caring
Lets face what you're afraid of to find out what we're made of
In the process made aware that there is nothing here worth
fearing

Open and honest that is just my suggestion
You don't know when they might throw at you curve ball or a
question
And even if you knew it you might not know who threw it
That might be worse I'm thinking or that might be my impression
So let's not mention who you paid attention to
Could not afford to get on board but something struck a cord
with you
And then from that point on you knew you were to far gone
To go back when there's more I'm sure to go for and look forward
to

Well aware and self asserted warned and well alerted
A bond so strong it can't be wrong and it will never be deserted
Stick together that's the plan stick to that the best we can
Nothing left to say
Thank you

Well aware and self asserted warned and well alerted
A bond so strong it can't be wrong and it will never be deserted
Stick together that's the plan stick to that the best we can
Nothing left to say
Thank you
